ESSA accreditation is the national professional standard for exercise and sport science practitioners in Australia.
ESSA stands for Exercise & Sports Science Australia, the peak professional body responsible for accrediting qualified exercise professionals and setting evidence based standards for safe, effective practice.
Practitioners accredited by ESSA, including Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) and Accredited Exercise Scientists (AESs) must complete accredited university degrees, extensive supervised practical experience, and ongoing professional development to maintain their accreditation.
ESSA accredited professionals:
• Work to nationally recognised clinical and professional standards
• Deliver evidence based exercise programs
• Maintain current first aid, CPR, and professional indemnity insurance
• Commit to continuing education every year to stay up to date with best practice
Accredited Exercise Physiologists are recognised allied health professionals whose services are approved under Medicare, NDIS, DVA, workers’ compensation schemes, and many private health funds, giving clients confidence in both quality and eligibility for funding pathways.
In simple terms, ESSA accreditation ensures you’re receiving safe, high quality care from a properly trained professional who is accountable, up to date, and working to nationally recognised standards.
